Zermatt Ultra (Switzerland)
Recommended by: Jason Buckley
Briefly Tell Us About the Race Format
A 28 mile uphill trail race at altitude in the Swiss valley of Zermatt. There's also the option of uphill half marathon and standard 26.2 mile uphill marathons. All three races take place at the same time. The race isn't as scary as it might sound: there's no need for any specialy equipment although trail shoes are useful. The race is very well supported with lots of drinks stations, sporadic support along the course, and very little technical difficulty. The hard part is the fact most of the race is uphill, finishing at over 10,000 feet at Gornergrat, so the air's a tad thin.
What Kind of Race Is It? Ultra Marathon (a short one, but uphill)
What Distance is the Race (roughly)? 28 Miles
Why Do You Recommend this Race?
The scenery starts off as very pretty and proceeds to become increasingly jaw-dropping. In the final few miles there are no trees and you're surrounded by 4000m snow-capped Alpine peaks. On clear days the Matterhorn stands huge alongside you. It's hair-raising, once-in-a-lifetime stuff.
What Month Does the Race Take Place? July
Where is the Race (nearest town) Zermatt
Any more info (web links, course description etc)?
